Taxing E-Commerce Affiliates: The Potential Impact Of New York State’s “Amazon Tax”

    Get PDF
On June 1, 2008 New York State imposed a new law, called the “Amazon tax”, that requires online retailers who receive more than $10,000 per year in revenue from New York affiliates to collect New York sales tax. While a number of major online retailers have challenged the law in court, it has already had a significant impact on affiliate marketers. If the law is upheld other states will enact similar laws. This paper details the impact of the law on affiliate marketers, online retailers, and affiliate networks. It provides specific short and long range recommendations to each of these types of companies

Using Nuisance Telephone Denial of Service to Combat Online Sex Trafficking

    Get PDF
Over the past few years, sex trafficking has been linked to online classified ads sites such as Craigslist.com and Backpage.com. However, to date technology-based solutions have not been used to attack classified ad sites or the advertisers. This paper proposes and tests a new approach to combating online sex trafficking promulgated via online classified ad sites - nuisance telephone denial of service (TDoS) attacks on the advertisers. The method of attack is described and implications are discussed

Choosing A Wiki Platform For Student Projects Lessons Learned

    Get PDF
Wikis offer many benefits, such as two-way flows of information, early and consistent feedback, and greater student group collaboration, in an educational setting.  Some researchers have already reported on the use of Wikis in their classes.  However, instructors must choose an appropriate Wiki platform in order to receive all of the benefits of their use.  Failure to do so can lead to significant frustration on the part of both students and the instructor.  Using a framework put forth by Schwartz et. al. (2004), this paper reports on the use of various Wiki platforms in an introductory information systems class.  Lessons learned from this experience are discussed

Responding To State Sales Tax Laws For Online Retailers A Case Study Of Amazon And The States

    Get PDF
As state budgets have come under increasing pressure, many states have enacted so called Amazon taxes that seek to have large online retailers collect state sales tax. States are attempting to expand the concept of nexus to include marketing affiliates and corporate subsidiaries. Amazon and other large retailers have reacted in different ways depending on the state and the specific legislation. This paper discusses the potential impact of these new laws and how both states and online retailers have dealt with the issues involved

    Peter and Elaine Moss: Franchisees

Peter Moss, a business school professor, and his wife, Elaine, a corporate executive, bought a Hair Shear franchise in the suburban Maryland area in July 2007. Hair Shear was a national chain of over 2,000 stores, all of which were franchisee owned.  Peter and Elaine Moss contracted with Philip Levinson, a commercial real estate agent authorized by Hair Shear, to obtain a suitable location for their franchise.  During her training session at Hair Shear headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, Elaine learned of the importance of a good location for the success of the franchise.  The first location identified by the real estate agent did not work out because the strip mall’s main tenant, a day spa, vetoed the entry of a hair dressing salon, considering the salon to be a competitor.  Elaine Moss identified a second location only to be told much later by the real estate agent that the location was taken by a barber friend of the landlord.  Disappointed by their inability to find a suitable location, the Moss’ met a couple who owned multiple Hair Shear stores in Maryland who suggested that they typically negotiated directly with landlords.  This couple suggested a third location for the Moss’ to consider.  The dilemma facing Peter and Elaine Moss is two fold: “which of the two was the ideal location for their store?” The larger question was,” should they bypass the authorized real estate agent and negotiate directly with the landlord?”

    Classy Delicates: A Case Study

Andy Steiner was checking the Internet for late night West Coast baseball game scores early on Saturday morning, August 3rd, 2007, when an email message popped up on his screen. It was a message from a prospective buyer for Classy Delicates, Steiner’s online lingerie retailing business.  Intrigued by the offer, Steiner contacted the prospective buyer who reiterated his intention and talked specific terms for the purchase.  “Isn’t this a coincidence,” remarked Steiner to his wife, Julia.  “We were just talking about the future of our business and here comes this new offer. This is the fourth offer we’ve had.”  “We should consider a sale of the business seriously,” said Julia, “even though you were thinking of upgrading the site to improve traffic.”  “How much time do we have to examine the offers?” asked Julia to her husband.  “The current buyer has made an offer to one other business and he told me that it’s either the other business or us, and not both.  I don’t know if he is bluffing or not, but I think we have a week to decide for all four,” answered Steiner.&nbsp

Applying a Framework for Software Development Methods in an Information Systems Curriculum

    Get PDF
Software developers are constantly exploring new software development methods that are timely and cost effective, and also foster productivity and better quality systems. A Software Development Method (SDM) is a system of technical procedures and notational conventions for the organized construction of software [Karam and Casselman p. 34]. Karam and Casselman [1] provide a framework for evaluating SDMs within an organization. There are 14 technical properties, 5 usage properties and 2 managerial properties. Is this framework viable for cataloging SDMs in an academic setting, thereby providing guidelines for selecting an appropriate software development methodology for an Information Systems curriculum? The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of a cataloging framework for SDMs within a business Information Systems curriculum. Information Engineering (IE) and Software Engineering (SE) are SDMs used to illustrate the usage of framework. The framework can be expanded to include additional SDMs. The Washington Post (February 24, 1993) forecasts a 78% increase in the demand for system analysts within the next 10 years. It is important for Information Systems\u27 graduates to know state of the art techniques, and therefore, courses must constantly be updated to meet this demand

A Comparison Of Video Formats For Online Teaching

    Get PDF
The use of video to deliver content to students online has become increasingly popular.  However, educators are often plagued with the question of which format to use to deliver asynchronous video material.  Whether it is a College or University committing to a common video format or an individual instructor selecting the method that works best for his or her course, this research presents a comparison of various video formats that can be applied to online education and provides guidance in which one to select
